Tips for Working Remotely From People Who Do it All the Time

Working remotely is not a new trend. Although people are waking up to working from home or working remotely, it isn’t a novel concept. It has just been brought to the notice of people owing to the novel coronavirus or Covid-19 and various lockdown announced by governments all across the globe. We can always learn from the people who have been working remotely from a long time - especially the freelancers. Freelance market has been huge since before, and outsourcing of work is nothing new. Some of the ways to make working remotely work for you are:

Set a Working Space

It isn’t possible to work from your bed with laptop by the side. It doesn’t work out and the productivity nosedives. Most of the times, you don’t have the will to work while working from a bed or a lounge. The concentration levels too are down. Having a small working space is enough, a place where you are not disturbed. Everyone should know that this place is sacred, and no one is allowed without permission during your work timings.

Set up Office Timings

Many of the people recently complained that they have been working more, and having lesser of work-life balance than working from office. This is an essential step now, to have both the peace of mind while also managing work better. Working from home will always be a difficult job, especially with the kind of perks involved in not working. It could be your spouse, your children, parents, some guests, or simple food breaks. Having fixed and strict timings help you deal with the work properly, and also allow you the luxury of being at ease with your schedule.

Have a Backup Internet

Internet is the most important part of a remote office setup. You don’t want to be stuck on due to the lack of proper internet. You need a reliable high-speed internet connection, for starters. But you also need to have some back-up. It could be a dongle or something that is available when needed. Mobile internet would work too via Hotspot, as long as it doesn’t disrupt your calling. You should have enough backup to cover for at least a couple of day’s delays.

Have some Music in the Background

A small portable Bluetooth speaker is enough to improve work productivity. By music, it doesn’t mean that you listen to songs etc. Although you could do that too, especially if your job involves some creative work. However, some form of background music does help boost productivity. There are YouTube channels that provide live music of various genres. The right music helps dopamine release by stimulation of the brain. The feeling of well-being takes care of the mental aspects while you work.

Working remotely isn’t something that is new. It is, however, not a straightforward ask for many of the people to shift to work from home. Some of the habits can help achieve the targets and actually improve on both work-life balance and personal health.
